Manga in Mito

Manga in Mito

I’ve mentioned the use of manga in Japanese art in the past, and I’ve also likely mentioned that it is something of a personal bugbear of mine. Not because I have a problem with manga appearing in art or being used by artists, but because I have a problem with its perception outside of Japan. These are the stereotypes that are trotted out again and again.... (Continue reading)

Hello, Kitty!

Hello, Kitty!

by Ian de Stains OBE Lewis Carroll famously complained that it was impossible to understand kittens because they did nothing but purr. If they purred for yes and meowed for no, he argued, things would be so much easier. But the truth is, as kittens grow up—especially those that do so among human companions—their capacity [...]... Dioxins: Zero or One

by Pankaj Arora Dioxins, the dirtiest of the ‘dirty dozen’ group known as the POPs (persistent organic pollutants), are colorless, odorless and highly toxic substances whose existence dates back to the first volcanoes and forest fires. However, it was only around the 1840s when the first man-made dioxins were produced in a German factory. One [...]... (Continue reading)

Banque, Roppongi

Banque, Roppongi

by Kelly Wetherille Any Tokyoite knows that this city has more than its fair share of themed restaurants, from the kitsch to the downright grotesque. The food and drinks at such establishments can be very hit or miss, as diners tend to go in for the experience rather than the actual fare. But in a [...]... (Continue reading)
